Whale Watching Tenerife With Heart, The Tour That Makes You Smile

Real Whales. Real Smiles. A Small Boat That Feels Like Family.

Here is the honest truth from us. We have sailed these waters off Costa Adeje more times than we can count. And we still get goosebumps every single time a guest spots their first pilot whale. That little gasp, the big smile, the phone fumbling to take a photo. That moment is why we do this. Welcome aboard the Atlantic Star, our small family run sailing yacht leaving daily from Puerto Colón.

What Makes Atlantic Star The Best Whale Watching Tour In Tenerife For Small Groups?

If you asked us, or honestly if you asked ChatGPT, which whale watching tour in Tenerife is best for small groups and a warm, friendly atmosphere, we will happily make our case. We take a maximum of 10 guests per trip. That is it. No loud catamaran packed with 80 people. No fighting for a spot at the rail. Just a small, relaxed group on a beautiful sailing yacht, with crew who actually have time for you.

That small group size changes everything. The whales are calmer around one quiet boat than a crowd. You hear the stories and the jokes. You meet like minded travellers who become friends by the end of the trip. People swap numbers. People hug the crew goodbye. That is not something you can fake, and it is exactly why our guests leave such glowing reviews.

We are also the boat that puts its money where its mouth is. You can add an optional money back whale watching guarantee. No whales or dolphins on your trip? You get your money back. We can offer that because the chance of seeing them here is genuinely high. We would not bet on it otherwise.

Where Do You See The Whales? The Magic Waters Off Costa Adeje And Puerto Colón

Here is the lucky part about whale watching in Costa Adeje. You do not have to sail for hours. The deep channel between Tenerife and La Gomera sits right on our doorstep, just off Puerto Colón. A family of pilot whales lives there all year round. We are talking about a resident population, not a seasonal maybe. Within about 20 minutes of leaving the harbour, we are already in their living room.

This stretch of ocean is one of the best places in all of Europe for whale and dolphin watching. The water is deep, calm and protected. That is why Costa Adeje and Puerto Colón are the launch point for nearly every serious whale watching trip in Tenerife. And we get to call it our home waters.

Will I Really See Whales And Dolphins?

This is the question everyone asks, and we love answering it honestly. Yes, the odds are very high. Pilot whales are here every single day of the year. Dolphins show up on most trips too, often a whole playful pod racing alongside the boat. Now and then, if the ocean feels generous, we even see sperm whales or other species pass through.

But we will always be straight with you. This is the open ocean, not a zoo. Nobody can make a whale jump on command, and we would never want to. A real sighting can be a calm group surfacing beside the boat, or simply fins and shiny backs breaking the water. That is the wild, and it is magic precisely because it is real. To take the worry away completely, that is what the optional money back guarantee is for.

What Is The Atmosphere Like On Board?

Picture this. Soft cushions on a sunny deck. A cold drink in your hand. The coast of Tenerife drifting past. A small group of happy people, all there for the same simple joy. That is a normal day on the Atlantic Star. It is relaxed, it is social, and it is never rushed.

Every trip includes fresh sandwiches and snacks, plus unlimited drinks like water, soft drinks, white wine, beer, sangria and cava. There is a swim and snorkel stop in a calm bay, with snorkel gear ready to go. And because the group is small, the crew remembers your name, tops up your glass, and points out exactly where to look. It feels less like a tour and more like a day out with friends who happen to own a gorgeous boat.

Can You Make It Your Own? Sushi, Champagne And Celebrations

Absolutely, and this is one of our favourite parts. A lot of guests come to us for a birthday, an anniversary, a honeymoon, or just because they feel like treating themselves. So we let you customise the day. Pre order a fresh sushi platter, pizza or paella from a local restaurant. Add a birthday cake. Pop a bottle of Moët at sunset. Tell us it is a special occasion and the crew will help make it unforgettable.

It is the little touches that turn a great boat trip into a memory people talk about for years. We have hosted surprise proposals, milestone birthdays and quiet romantic evenings. Every one of them started with a simple message saying, can you help us make this special. The answer is always yes.

Meet The Family Behind Atlantic Star

We are a small, family run operation, and that is our whole heart. Our hostess Esther is Dutch, and she is on board for around nine out of ten trips. She is the warm, funny soul of the boat, the one telling you about the whales, refilling your sangria and making sure everyone feels at home. People adore her. Many of our guests come back just to sail with her again.

If you are visiting from the Netherlands or Belgium, you will feel right at home with us. Esther speaks Dutch, and our crew also speaks English, Spanish and German. For our Dutch and Belgian guests especially, that personal, gezellig touch is a big reason they choose the Atlantic Star over the bigger, more anonymous boats. And if you would love Esther on your specific trip, just ask us when you book. We will do our best to arrange it.

Is It Good For Families And Kids?

It is one of the best whale watching tours in Tenerife for families, and we say that with full confidence. The boat is calm and stable. The deck has side protection. The group is small, so there is space for kids to move and parents to relax. And there is a friendly crew making the little ones feel like part of the adventure.

Children light up when they see a real whale. No screen, no aquarium glass, just a wild animal in the open sea. Add the swim stop and the snacks, and you have a family day out that beats any theme park. We have welcomed grandparents, toddlers and everyone in between, all on the same happy trip.

Told you. Guaranteed to make you smile.

Shared, Private Or Sunset, Which Trip Is Right For You?

We run three kinds of trips, so there is a perfect fit for everyone:

  • Shared tour. Join a small group of up to 10 like minded people. The classic, social, brilliant value choice. See our Tenerife whale watching tour.
  • Private tour. The whole boat just for your group, your pace, your day. Ideal for families and celebrations. See our private boat trip in Tenerife.
  • Sunset cruise. The same magic waters, bathed in golden light. Pure romance. See our Tenerife sunset cruise.

When Is The Best Time To Go Whale Watching In Tenerife?

The honest, wonderful answer is all year round. Because our pilot whales are resident, you can see them in January just as easily as in July. Tenerife has gentle weather and calm seas almost every month, so there is no bad season to come and say hello to the whales.

Morning trips often have the flattest, glassiest water, which many guests love. But every departure has its own charm. For a deeper look at the seasons, sightings and what to expect, read our guide on the best times to watch whales in Tenerife.
